When to Book to Save: The Book-Early Guide
By Fond Travels · Updated October 7, 2026
For most trips, booking early is the surest way to save — and to get exactly what you want. While last-minute deals suit flexible travellers, booking ahead is the better bet whenever your dates or destination are fixed. Here is how far ahead to book different kinds of trips from Canada, and why early almost always wins.
Why booking early saves money
- Early-bird promotions — operators reward early commitment with discounts, free nights or extras, released months before travel.
- Lower fares before demand climbs — flights are usually cheapest well before the seats fill; prices tend to rise as a date approaches.
- Best choice, best rooms, best seats — the popular resorts, swim-up rooms, cruise cabins and good flight times go first.
- Deposit now, pay later — many packages let you lock a price with a deposit and pay the balance closer to travel.
- Price-drop protection — if the price falls after you book, we can often rebook you at the lower rate; ask us.
How far ahead to book
A rough guide for travellers from Canada:
- Sun & all-inclusive weeks — 3 to 6 months ahead for the best mix of price and choice.
- Europe in summer — 6 to 9 months; peak-season flights and hotels climb fast.
- Christmas, New Year & March break — as early as you can, often 6+ months; these sell out and only get pricier.
- Cruises — 6 to 12 months for the best cabins and early-booking perks.
- Guided tours & long-haul (Asia, Africa, South America) — 6 to 12 months; small-group departures and the best lodges fill early.
- Snowbird / long-stay winters — book in spring or summer for the coming winter.
Which trips you should always book early
Anything with fixed dates or limited supply: peak Caribbean and Mexico weeks over the holidays and March break, Europe in summer, cruises, safaris, and long-stay winter escapes. For these, waiting rarely pays off — the deal is getting in before everyone else does.
How to book early and still protect yourself
Booking early does not mean locking yourself in blindly. Put down a deposit to hold the price, add travel insurance that covers cancellation, and keep your dates as open as the fare allows. If a better price appears later, we can look at rebooking. The goal is to secure your choice early and stay flexible where it counts.
