There is nothing quite like a European Christmas market — twinkling lights, mulled wine, wooden stalls and the smell of roasting chestnuts in a centuries-old square. For Canadians, late November and December are the magic window, and the trips book up early. Here are the best markets and how to plan one, all arranged in Canadian Dollars.
When are the European Christmas markets on?
Most run from mid/late November to Christmas Eve, with a few continuing to New Year. The first three weeks of December are the sweet spot — full festive atmosphere before the Christmas-week crowds and prices. Because it's a short season, flights and hotels sell out, so book by early autumn.
The best Christmas market cities
- Vienna, Austria — grand markets in front of the Rathaus and the palaces; one of the most beautiful.
- Germany (Nuremberg, Cologne, Munich, Dresden) — the birthplace of the Christkindlmarkt, with the most famous markets of all.
