Iceland Northern Lights: When & How to See Them
By Fond Travels · Updated September 22, 2026
Seeing the Northern Lights dance over Iceland is a bucket-list moment for many Canadians — and Iceland is one of the closest places to do it, often just an overnight flight from Eastern Canada. Here's how to plan an aurora trip that gives you the best possible odds, with the flights, hotels and tours arranged in Canadian Dollars.
When can you see the Northern Lights in Iceland?
Aurora season in Iceland runs roughly September to March, when the nights are long and dark. The lights themselves appear year-round, but you can only see them against a dark sky. The best viewing months are usually late September–October and February–March, when you get dark nights and slightly milder, clearer weather than deep winter.
How to improve your odds
- Stay several nights. The aurora is never guaranteed — cloud and solar activity vary night to night — so 4+ nights dramatically improves your chances.
- Get away from city light. Reykjavík has some glow; a night or two in the countryside or on a guided aurora tour makes a big difference.
- Watch the forecast. Iceland publishes a cloud-cover and aurora-activity forecast; your guide or hotel will help you chase clear skies.
- Book an aurora tour. Local guides know where the sky is clearest each night and will drive you to it.
What else to do on an Iceland winter trip
The aurora is a night-time show, so your days are free for Iceland's other wonders: the Blue Lagoon, the Golden Circle (Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss), the South Coast waterfalls and black-sand beaches, and glacier and ice-cave tours that are at their best in winter. How long do you need?
A long weekend (3–4 nights) based in Reykjavík with day tours is enough for a first aurora trip and the Golden Circle. With 5–7 nights you can add the South Coast, ice caves, and more aurora chances. We'll match the length to your budget and your must-sees.
Pair it with more of the north
Many travellers combine Iceland with Scandinavia — Norway's fjords and the Arctic aurora — for a bigger northern adventure. It's all part of our Europe vacation packages.
